The Institute of Formation Fondacio Asia (IFFAsia) recently marked a significant milestone in its mission to form the next generation of Asian leaders through an encounter with His Excellency, Most Rev. Marcelino Antonio Maralit, Jr., D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of San Pablo and Chairman of the CBCP–Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY). Accompanied by Rev. Fr. Christian Dale Dakila, the Bishop engaged in a moment of listening and mutual encouragement that affirmed the institute’s unique approach to accompanying the youth in a rapidly changing digital world.
During the presentation of IFFAsia’s mission, Bishop Maralit emphasized the critical need for forming young people who are not only committed disciples but also critical thinkers. In an era where truth is often reshaped by the digital space, the dialogue focused on the call to nurture leaders capable of discernment and courage. The encounter served as a spiritual and professional affirmation for the IFFAsia community, which seeks to revitalize the missionary spirit across the Asian Church and civil society.
This meaningful engagement follows the formal launch of IFFAsia’s Batch 17 formation program, which commenced on February 8 with a Eucharistic celebration at Radio Veritas Asia. Presided over by Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon, Archbishop of Cáceres and IFFAsia Bishop Chair, the Mass set the tone for an 11-month journey under the theme “Walking in His Light, Living His Call.” The Archbishop invited the new participants to “unlock their hearts,” likening spiritual openness to finding a strong signal or connection in a modern world.
The current group, Batch 17, reflects IFFAsia’s deep commitment to intercultural formation, consisting of 13 participants from Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, East Timor, and South Korea. These young leaders join a legacy that has spanned over 20 years, during which the institute has accompanied more than 250 participants from 16 countries. Through its Diploma in Integral Leadership and Community Development, offered in partnership with the Loyola School of Theology (LST), IFFAsia continues to provide a holistic framework for human and spiritual growth.
As the program progresses, participants are encouraged to re-discover themselves and grow in a synodal-collaborative spirit. Ms. Florence A. Alexius, Director of IFFAsia, highlighted that the heart of the institute lies in shared transformation. She noted that the formation team and staff are equally committed to their own personal growth, learning to embrace vulnerabilities and mature through communion with one another – a value they hope to instill in every young leader who journeys with them.
IFFAsia continues to invite motivated individuals between the ages of 23 and 38 to join their programs and become agents of change. With scholarships currently available, the institute remains dedicated to equipping young people to serve the peripheries and contribute to the progress of their home communities across Asia.
